I know that Canada does not get a lot of coverage in the US, so here are some items from my side of the border., even though I have already posted today.
The nonsensical tariff war is on. Following is a excerpt from the section of Prime Minister Trudeau's speech that was directed specifically to Americans.
As President John F. Kennedy said many years ago, "Geography has made us neighbours, history has made us friends, economics has made us partners and necessity has made us allies." That rang true for many decades prior to President Kennedy's time in office and the decades since. From the beaches of Normandy to the mountains of the Korean Peninsula, from the fields of Flanders to the streets of Kandahar, we have fought and died alongside you during your darkest hours.
During the Iranian hostage crisis, those 444 days, we worked around the clock from our embassy to get your innocent compatriots home. During the summer of 2005, when Hurricane Katrina ravaged your great city of New Orleans, or mere weeks ago, when we sent water bombers to tackle the wildfires in California, during the day the world stood still — Sept. 11, 2001 — when we provided refuge to stranded passengers and planes, we were always there, standing with you, grieving with you, the American people.
Together, we've built the most successful economic, military and security partnership the world has ever seen; a relationship that has been the envy of the world. Yes, we've had our differences in the past, but we've always found a way to get past them.
As I've said before, if President Trump wants to usher in a new golden age for the United States, the better path is to partner with Canada, not to punish us. Canada has critical minerals, reliable and affordable energy, stable democratic institutions, shared values and the natural resources you need. Canada has the ingredients necessary to build a booming and secure partnership for the North American economy, and we stand at the ready to work together.
You can read the whole speech here or listen here. The part addressed specifically to Americans is near the beginning and is a few minutes long.
It's not just our prime minister. This is what the premier of Ontario has posted.
“Every year, LCBO sells nearly $1 billion-worth of American wine, beer, spirits and seltzers. Not anymore,” said Ford in a Feb. 2 post on X (formerly Twitter).
“Starting Tuesday, we’re removing American products from LCBO shelves. As the only wholesaler of alcohol in the province, LCBO will also remove American products from its catalogue so other Ontario-based restaurants and retailers can’t order or restock U.S. products.
Removal of American liquor is happening in provinces across Canada, targeting mostly whiskey and bourbon from the red sates as far as I understand. Canada is the biggest customer of these American products.
This just in from Premier Ford.
That contract with Starlink was $100 million. |
Meanwhile I can tell you that ordinary Canadians are perusing the shelves in order to avoid American products as much as possible. Many are opting out of American vacations. The stock market is down, and we are even booing the American anthem at hockey games. All because the orange buffoon thinks he can annex Canada, not to mention Greenland and Panama. What have you Americans wrought? (I know, not necessarily you, personally.)
The news go on apace this morning.
There are no words to express how I feel about this whole mess. I am buying Canadian for sure!
ReplyDelete👍
DeleteI am ashamed and sorry. We have been heading down this road for nearly 50 years and now here we are. I cannot fully express how terrible I feel about this. Minnesota's hockey team was playing against your team when the anthem was booed. As a Minnesotan, I stand with Canada.
ReplyDeleteThank you.
DeleteWell done, Canada! Keep going. The orange one is a buffoon of the first order and is doing much damage.
ReplyDelete“Of the first order” is correct.
DeleteSupport these measures 100%. We have elected a monster, and are reaping the whirlwind. He told us what he was going to do, we watched him get convicted of treasons, know he raped and molested more than one woman, seen all his business failures and witnessed him making fun of a disabled person. All that, then we elected him.
ReplyDeleteIn 1971 my wife and I had been approved for immigration to Canada. We wanted to live around the Kamloops area. One thing and another happened, she went to grad school down here, and we didn't go. Our papers were waiting for us to declare. I so regret that now.
I will consider you to be an honorary Canadian with a ‘u’. 😀
DeleteWhile I'm a bit supportive of Chinese tariffs, and see the bargaining tactic at play in leveling them against Mexico, why Trump want to charge higher tariffs against Canada baffles me. I have not heard of an uncontrolled immigration or drug problem on our northern border. Currently we have a $41 billion trade deficit with your country but that is peanuts compared our trade deficits with China and Mexico and miniscule compared to our annual budget.
ReplyDeleteIf I understand correctly, the deficit has to do with resources. I believe it is in your favour in terms of manufactured products. I am not sure how this can be balanced if that is the case.
DeleteI just was notified we are no longer at war. We can go back to being blogger friends as normal and even ship products back and forth to each other freely again.
DeleteYou KNOW how I feel. I am ashamed of the Americans who chose to vote someone so greedy and horrible. I'm still in disbelief. I've always felt that Canadians knew more about our politics than MOST Americans.
ReplyDeleteApparently the tariffs are postponed and it feels like Mexico and Canada have given in to the Orange Despot. I hope that's not the case, but it's certainly how they will spin it here. If I were you (Canadian), I would continue to boycott American products, especially those from red states. Of course, I would love it if you continue to buy Washington apples and cherries. :)
ReplyDeleteI can't even begin to say how I fe about all this. Beyond ing, it's outright outrageous. I am so sorry, Canadian friends.
ReplyDeleteTrump was elected by 3 groups: the very rich, the very (stupid) fundamental Christians, and the very stupid lower economic class who somehow think that voting for him was sticking it to "the man", whoever that is. They LOVE seeing federal employees losing their jobs. I can only hope for the day when Trumops actions affect their lives, as it surely will. Then listen to them cry! The sad part is, it will affect many who can least afford it, and very likely will affect me too. Unless our Congress and Supreme Court grow some balls, we are in deep trouble down here.
As with Kay above you know where I stand. He is a horrible, ignorant, narcissist. There are people standing up to him but their voices are not being amplified in the same ways. It is totally shameful that he is so ignorant of the bonds between our nations. Last I read he's going to go after the EU next.
ReplyDeleteWe plan to vacation in Quebec this July and bring Canada some of our dollars.
I'm sorry for you and your country for this awful treatment.
Ok, just read Ed's second comment and I see the tariffs were put on hold for 30 days.
Still this episode did not have to happen.
Go, Canada. The Orange Embarrassment is endangering all of us.
ReplyDeleteI have so enjoyed reading and listening to Canada's response. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad for the reprieve, and wonder how much of it is due to Trudeau's excellent speech, which I saw on TV yesterday. Also glad for the Mexican reprieve. I hope things settle down in the next month and this was all just stupid bullshit posturing by that asshole in chief. I'm deeply sorry for all of this.
ReplyDeleteAll this silly stupidity does not represent MOST in the US. We cannot control tRump, and only folks with true evil intent or misguided stupidity voted for him.
ReplyDeleteSadly, these upcoming four years seem to be on track with having the craziness skyrocket in a logrhythmically larger way that the craziness of 2017-2021 (sigh).
Will you let people like me migrate to Canada?
PipeTobacco
We are not amused when lies and misinformation are used as a bargaining ploy.
ReplyDeleteI love the fact that your country is united. I have heard of people boycotting US goods. If so, we will feel a pinch. The US did this before with Smoot-Hawley Act of 1930. It did not work then. It won't work now.
ReplyDeleteI suspect that the Stock Market slide got his Trumpiness's attention. I note we now have a one month reprieve but are having to reinforce our border with the US of A. Perhaps we should build a wall with the American canned goods that we are not going to buy. Hmm?
ReplyDeleteThis is so, so stupid. In fact, it is tragic. I think we should empower Freeland and send her down to Washington asap. She can get to him. Meanwhile, the First Friend (if you delete the 'r', you have First Fiend) seems to be running loose.
Frightening, in fact.
I saw a political cartoon of the liar-in-chief pissing into an oscillating fan labeled with the Canadian flag. Bingo.
ReplyDeleteQuite proud of my fellow Canadians pushing back today, but also sad. Canadians & Americans have been friends and family for more than a century; Indigenous people barely acknowledge the border between their tribes. It's insane and we're three weeks in. Sigh.
Ditto all of the above. I just wish the Canadians wouldn't boo during the U.S. anthem at hockey games. We smart Americans don't like what's happening either. Supposedly Musk has a look at our Medicare and Social Security. I don't like that at all. Linda in Kansas
ReplyDeleteUntil we regain our equilibrium, please forgive us, and also remember the time when the hockey crowd sang the American anthem acapella after the soloists mic malfunctioned. Not a great video, but here we are: https://dai.ly/x8v6kt8 .
DeleteA good follow-up read is Heather Cox Richardson's Letters from an American newsletter (available on Facebook too) this morning...some of the pause elements were actually already part of Canada's and MExico's border efforts.
ReplyDeleteYes.
DeleteWe let rats into our gov't and they are going to pillage and rape our data.
ReplyDeleteI stand with Canada and Mexico.
Thank you. The fool seems to think that these reprehensible actions will make us want to join his country.
DeleteThe man is a dangerous lunatic. Go Canada!
ReplyDeleteHe blinked -- for now anyway.
DeleteIt is cheering to read the comments of sane Americans. Even if they are as discouraged as we are.
ReplyDeleteIt does remind me that there are good people down there. In point of fact, I don't think I've ever met an America whom I have personally disliked.
DeleteGood summary (apart from the further postponement of the tariffs). What I fear is a growing animosity between our countries, all because of one man and his absurd ideas!
ReplyDeleteNot on the friendship level, I hope.
DeleteIt is awful. These animals, rich white men... no values.
